Are you interested in pursuing a career in medicine or dentistry? The Dr. Levi Watkins Jr.
Endowed Scholarship Fund is currently seeking candidates who are passionate about these professions. This scholarship was established in honor of Dr. Levi Watkins Jr., an alumnus of TSU and a renowned cardiac surgeon who made history by performing the first internal defibrillator implantation.
The main goal of this fund is to remove financial barriers that often discourage underrepresented students from pursuing high-level medical careers. By providing significant financial assistance, the endowment allows scholars to complete a streamlined seven-year curriculum instead of the traditional eight years, without being burdened by overwhelming student debt. Currently, the number of applicants is low, which means that there is a great opportunity for those who are interested, according to the Mutual Alliance Restoring Community Hope Foundation.
This endowment specifically rewards students who excel academically and meet the rigorous standards of the Dr. Levi Watkins Jr. Institute.
Eligible students must have a strong interest in the medical field and must also have a minimum GPA of 3.5 and either an ACT score of 28 or a SAT score of 1300. As a recipient of this scholarship, you will receive more than just financial assistance for your tuition. The funds will also cover the intensive three-year pre-medical phase at TSU, as well as support your transition into a four-year medical or dental program at Meharry Medical College, Sidney Kimmel Medical College, or the Frist College of Medicine.
In addition, the scholarship will help you build your professional identity by funding important milestones such as the White Coat Ceremony and providing opportunities for specialized physician shadowing. Thanks to the financial security provided by this fund, previous scholars have been able to fully focus on their demanding coursework, resulting in a 61% increase in the Biology Department's graduation rate at TSU. In fact, the first cohort of scholarship recipients produced the top two graduates of the university in 2024, both of whom maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA throughout their accelerated undergraduate program.
