African Export-Import Bank has recently made an exciting announcement regarding its investment in the continent's creative economy. In collaboration with the Fund for Export Development in Africa, the bank plans to raise a remarkable $1 billion to boost Africa's film and television industry, as reported by Deadline. The official launch of the Pan-African Film Fund was announced by the bank on July 8, through its development impact investment arm, FEDA.
This initiative aims to provide financial support for various aspects of the film and television production process, including production facilities, post-production infrastructure, digital distribution platforms, and exhibition networks. Its ultimate goal is to help African content compete on a global level in the entertainment industry. The Pan-African Film Fund has appointed publishing executive and producer Lavaille Lavette as its chief executive officer.
Alongside this, FEDA has also chosen One Street Studios as the co-general partner to assist in managing the fund's investment strategy and operations. Lavette, who is also the managing partner of One Street Studios, co-founded JVL Media with Academy Award-winning actor Viola Davis and producer Julius Tennon. The fund's investment approach will be in the form of equity, quasi-equity, and structured financing, with a focus on commercially viable film, television, and immersive media projects that have the potential for international distribution.
This investment platform is expected to strengthen Africa's creative economy by providing creators and production companies with long-term capital. In a statement, Lavette expressed the crucial role that the Pan-African Film Fund will play in supporting African storytelling and strengthening the continent's creative industries. He believes that this initiative will mobilize long-term capital that will not only support creators but also build sustainable global distribution pathways for African content.
The Pan-African Film Fund is an expansion of Afreximbank's Creative Africa Nexus initiative, which aims to transform Africa's cultural and creative industries into drivers of economic development, job creation, and exports. This fund is a part of the CANEX program, first introduced in May 2025, and is expected to become one of the largest investment vehicles dedicated to financing Africa's film and television industry, according to FEDA. In other news, 'Earn Your Leisure' has recently expanded its global presence with the launch of EYL Africa.
This will further promote the growth and development of Africa's creative industries, showcasing the continent's potential to the world. The future looks bright for Africa's creative economy, with the Pan-African Film Fund leading the way towards a prosperous and thriving industry.
