Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston have announced that they are moving on from their time in WWE. It marks the end of an era for the popular duo known as The New Day. After 20 and 16 years respectively, Kofi and Xavier have decided to hang up their boots and step away from the wrestling giant.
Together, they have spent 12 years as a team, debuting on WWE Raw in 2014 to great fanfare. According to sources such as Fightful Select and Bodyslam's Cory Hays, the decision was made by both Kofi and Xavier to part ways with WWE in a mutual agreement. This news comes in the midst of a wave of releases from the company, including names like Kairi Sane and the entire Wyatt Sicks group.
Joining Kofi and Xavier in their departures are MFT members Tonga Loa and JC Matteo, as WWE continues to make changes to their main roster. The New Day's departure is a significant loss for the company, as they have been record-setters and fan favorites throughout their time in WWE. As The New Day, Kofi and Xavier have achieved more tag team titles than any other duo in WWE history, with a total of 13 reigns.
They also hold the record for the most SmackDown tag team championships at seven, as well as the longest reign as Raw tag team champions at 483 days. Kofi has also had individual success, becoming WWE Champion in 2019 after defeating Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 35. Reflecting on their partnership during an exclusive interview with The Agency in 2024, Kofi shared his thoughts on the success of The New Day.
"It's crazy to see how far we've come, especially considering how many people rejected us in the beginning," he said. "We came out with a message to be the best version of yourself and that you can achieve anything if you put your mind to it. But people booed us and told us we suck.
It's disappointing to see that kind of negativity." But The New Day didn't let the initial backlash hold them back. "We became so good at being bad guys that the fans started to love us again," Kofi joked. "It's been a roller coaster of emotions for sure, but we wouldn't have had it any other way."
