Walmart is making significant strides in investing in the development of its workforce. In a recent announcement on June 29, the retail giant shared its plans to launch a new training center for skilled trades in metro Atlanta. This move comes as many employers in the United States are struggling with a shortage of qualified workers in the technical field, according to reports from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The new training hub in Atlanta will be the fourth location for Walmart's Associate to Technician program. It will join existing sites in Texas, Florida, and Indiana. The location of the training center will be at Tulsa Welding School's DeKalb County campus.
Employees who participate in the program will receive tuition-free training in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, refrigeration, electrical systems, and facility maintenance, as stated by the outlet. The expansion of this program is a response to the growing demand for skilled trades workers. The U.S.
Department of Education has projected that by 2030, there could be as many as 2.1 million unfilled positions in this field. This could create significant economic challenges for employers and industries that rely on technical labor. Donna Morris, Walmart's chief people officer, shared her thoughts on the company's decision to invest in skilled trades careers.
"Walmart is committed to creating pathways for our associates to pursue careers in HVAC, refrigeration, and electrical systems," she said in a statement. "By investing in their skills and providing opportunities for growth, we not only strengthen our business, but we also create lasting career opportunities for our employees." Walmart has set a goal to train 4,000 associates through this program by 2030. Since its launch, over 600 employees have completed the training and have successfully transitioned into skilled trades positions.
In addition to this program, the company has also announced higher wages for maintenance technicians. General maintenance technicians can now earn between $26 and $51 per hour, an increase from the previous range of $19 to $35 per hour. One success story from the program is Robin Medrano from Athens, Georgia.
She started her journey with Walmart by working in a fulfillment center, unloading trailers and packing customer orders. After completing the company's training, she was able to advance into a general maintenance technician role. This is just one example of how Walmart is providing its employees with opportunities to grow and advance within the company.
The expansion in Atlanta is part of Walmart's larger effort to address workforce shortages and provide its employees with opportunities to earn industry-recognized credentials. This not only benefits the employees, but it also strengthens the company as a whole. With their commitment to investing in their workforce, Walmart is setting an example for other employers to follow.
And with the introduction of digital price tags in their stores, it's clear that Walmart is dedicated to staying ahead of the game in all aspects of their business.
