As is often the case with President Trump's self-serving actions, this latest move is nothing short of pathetic. In 2025, former FBI Director James Comey shared a seemingly innocuous photo on his personal Instagram page. The photo featured seashells arranged in the shape of '86 47', which may not seem significant at first glance.
However, Trump's administration is now using this photo as an excuse to try and put Comey behind bars. Amid the recent Royal Visit, it may have been easy to miss the news that a grand jury has indicted Comey for allegedly threatening the life of the President and has issued a warrant for his arrest. This is just another example of Trump's ego-driven antics, but it also highlights the dangerous path he is carving through American democracy.
While King Charles granted Trump the honor of a royal visit and spoke about the shared history of law and order between the two countries, Trump was actively using the Department of Justice to target his personal enemies. It may seem absurd, but it is also frightening. Trump, a man with access to nuclear weapons, can post a threatening message on social media without consequence, yet a photo of seashells is being used as evidence of a death threat.
The significance of '86 47' is that Trump is the 47th president and '86' is a common restaurant term that signifies something is no longer available or should be discarded. It is a seemingly harmless statement, yet now we are expected to believe it is a death threat. Meanwhile, Trump has a history of using his position of power to attack his political opponents.
He recently fired Attorney General Pam Bondi, who failed to secure charges against Comey, and the new Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche is now pursuing the case. Comey has long been a target for Trump, ever since he refused to drop the investigation into the ties between Russia and Trump's 2016 campaign. Even Comey's daughter, who was an assistant U.S.
attorney leading cases against Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, was fired by Trump. This may seem like just one legal case in the midst of Trump's countless acts of authoritarianism, but it is a dangerous one. Trump and his allies are not concerned with building a legitimate case against Comey; they are simply demonstrating their power and willingness to use the legal system to go after their enemies.
This designation of 'Antifa' as a domestic terrorist organization and the recent charges against Comey show that Trump is one step closer to using the law to target anyone he wishes, without evidence or legitimacy. However, there is hope in the fact that Trump's unqualified cronies are not very good at their jobs. The current FBI Director, Kash Patel, has already jeopardized the case against Comey by disclosing evidence presented before the grand jury.
And while the timing of the indictment may seem suspicious, it is likely because Trump is desperate for a win amidst his failures in Iran and plummeting approval ratings. Despite King Charles' diplomatic attempts, Trump has no interest in democracy, the rule of law, or international partnerships. He is only concerned with winning at any cost, even if the game is rigged.
While the King speaks of shared histories and values, the wannabe king acts as if he has the powers of an absolute monarchy. It is a disturbing situation, but one that we must continue to speak out against.
