Melanin Money, a financial education and wealth-building platform, is making strides towards their mission of closing the racial wealth gap. Founded in 2017 by George Acheampong and Carter Cofield, the organization offers a unique blend of education, advocacy, and actionable strategies to help individuals and families achieve financial freedom through coaching, investing, and entrepreneurship. Through various methods such as live events, online courses, and advisory services, Melanin Money has equipped thousands of people with the tools and knowledge needed to build generational wealth.
Cofield explained in an interview with BLACK ENTERPRISE that the idea for Melanin Money was sparked by a sense of urgency and purpose. After reading an article predicting that Black wealth would reach $0 by 2053, the founders realized the pressing need for advanced financial literacy within the Black community. They saw a lack of knowledge in higher-level concepts such as investing, tax-saving strategies, and entrepreneurship and made it their mission to bridge that gap.
One of the things that sets Melanin Money apart is the expertise of its founders. Acheampong, who is the No. 1 financial advisor in North Carolina, and Cofield, who is among the top certified public accountants in the country, bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the organization.
As a result, Melanin Money clients have collectively increased their net worth by over $100 million in just a few years. Most recently, Melanin Money held its annual Wealth Weekend 2026 conference in Atlanta, where they announced that members of their community had collectively reached $1.1 billion in audited net worth. This achievement is a significant step towards their goal of helping 100,000 people of color build their first or next $1 million in net worth.
The two-day event brought together over 600 entrepreneurs, executives, investors, and professionals from across the country for panel discussions and workshops on topics like AI, investing, entrepreneurship, tax strategy, and estate planning. The conference also featured notable speakers such as Blavity and AfroTech Founder and CEO Morgan DeBaun, wealth coach and investor Cedric Nash, and financial educator and investor Larry Jones, in addition to Acheampong and Cofield. The highlight of the conference was The Melanin Money 100 Awards Gala, hosted by actor, entrepreneur, and investor Terrence J.
The gala recognized Melanin Money clients who have achieved significant net worth milestones ranging from $100,000 to $10 million. It also honored influential Black leaders, founders, investors, innovators, executives, and community builders named to The MM100 List, which spotlights established and emerging changemakers in categories such as finance, tech, wellness, media, sports business, corporate leadership, and entrepreneurship. Towards the end of the gala, Acheampong and Cofield announced the launch of their newest initiative, MMvestED in U, which aims to provide financial education and funded investment accounts to 100,000 HBCU students before graduation.
The long-term vision includes entrepreneurship training, investment capital, mentorship, scholarships, internships, and partnerships with universities nationwide. The initiative began with a $50,000 contribution from investor Chris Sain II and The Chris Sain Foundation, which Melanin Money matched to establish a $100,000 founding fund. This initiative is set to launch in Fall 2027.
Looking towards the future, Acheampong and Cofield plan to bring Wealth Weekend 2027 to their headquarters in Dallas as part of their national expansion strategy. Melanin Money's ultimate goal is to prove the 2053 prediction wrong, not just by a small margin, but by $100 billion. As they continue to educate and empower individuals and families to build lasting wealth, they are making significant strides towards closing the racial wealth gap and changing the financial trajectory for future generations.
