Selby moves on from past Crucible loss, calling it a match he couldn't win.

Mark Selby, a renowned snooker player, faced consecutive defeats in the first round of the prestigious Crucible tournament. In 2025, he suffered a shocking loss in the opening round, but surprisingly, he is not worried about it. He sees it as a match that he simply couldn't win.

Last year, Selby arrived in Sheffield as one of the top contenders for the title. He had a successful season, winning the British Open and Welsh Open. However, despite being the favorite against fellow Leicester cueist Ben Woollaston, he suffered a major upset.

Selby played well in the first session, scoring a century and taking a 5-4 lead. But in the second session, he struggled and ultimately lost 10-8. The reason for his poor performance was a split tip on his cue, which was a huge disappointment for him.

However, he can now look back and excuse the defeat, rather than being haunted by it. Selby explained the issue with his cue, saying, "Ben played well, but in the first session, I miscued and my tip split." Since there was a day in between the sessions, Selby's friend from Nuneaton came to put a new tip on his cue. However, when he removed the tip, he noticed that the ferrule (a small metal piece that holds the tip in place) was loose.

To fix it, he had to remove it and then put it back on. Selby watched the whole process and felt like he couldn't win. Last year, Phil Haigh, a snooker reporter for Metro, covered the World Championship.

He has been reporting on snooker for over a decade, since working in World Snooker's press office in 2012. He now has a new newsletter, The Table, where he analyzes the biggest talking points, breaks down frames, and highlights the week's winners and losers every Monday. With the World Championship happening now, it's the perfect time to sign up.

Selby, who cut a frustrated figure at the Crucible last year, has had another successful season, winning the UK Championship, Champion of Champions, and Invitational Championship League. Although he has faced some tough opponents in recent weeks, he believes he has been playing well and has just run into players in top form. As he heads into his 22nd straight Crucible campaign, he is confident in his chances.

In the first round, Selby will face Jak Jones, who surprisingly reached the final in 2024. However, Selby is not concerned about who he faces. In the past, he used to worry about the draw and which opponents he would face, but now he is focused on winning the tournament.

He knows that whoever he faces, it will be a tough match, and he is prepared to give his best to win. He sees his upcoming match against Jones as a challenging one, but also a motivator to play his best snooker.
