The much-awaited State of Play event was finally here, and it did not disappoint. Although it was one of the longest showcases ever, clocking in at over an hour, it was a little light on surprise announcements. However, what it lacked in shock reveals, it made up for in exciting new release dates for highly anticipated games.
The event kicked off with Sony's announcement of Until Dawn 2, which was quickly followed by the reveal of release dates for several multi-platform titles, including Onimusha: Way Of The Sword, Silent Hill Townfall, and Ace Combat 8. But the real highlight of the night was the highly rumored and speculated God Of War Laufey, which took up a whopping 20 minutes at the end of the event. Despite the lack of surprise announcements, the showcased games were all incredibly interesting, both from first and third-party developers.
And the best part? We finally got release dates for some of the most highly anticipated games, such as Silent Hill Townfall, Control Resonant, Ace Combat 8, and Onimusha: Way Of The Sword. However, there was one disappointment in the mix.
Tomb Raider: Legacy Of Atlantis, which had been eagerly awaited by fans, has unfortunately been delayed. It's unclear whether this is due to development issues or a strategic move to avoid clashing with the release of GTA 6 in November. But either way, it's safe to say that fans were disappointed to hear the news.
The event also gave us a brief glimpse of Marvel's Wolverine, although it seems there may be a dedicated State of Play event in the future specifically for this game. The footage looked incredible, as expected, with plenty of gory action and familiar characters such as Jean Grey, Mystique, and Sabertooth. However, the release date was not news, as it had been previously announced.
Another exciting announcement was for Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, a one-on-one fighter from Arc System Works. While the release date wasn't a surprise, Sony did reveal some new and exciting villains for the game, including Doctor Doom, Magneto, Green Goblin, and Carnage. And the mysterious character sitting on the throne was revealed to be the Champion of the Universe, the main antagonist of the game.
But the biggest surprise of the night was the reveal of Rayman Legends Retold, a 3D remake of the beloved 2013 platformer. While there were no major surprises in terms of gameplay, the new 3D graphics looked stunning and maintained the charm of the original game. Another unexpected announcement was Bancho The Chef, a spin-off from non-indie game Dave The Diver.
While some fans were disappointed that it didn't maintain the same pixel art style as the original, the energy and charm of the trailer were still enough to get fans excited. Unfortunately, no release date was mentioned for this game. And then there was Kemuri, the latest game from The Evil Within's Ikumi Nakamura and her new studio Unseen.
This co-op action-adventure game had a unique twist, with players able to turn defeated yōkai into clothes that grant them special powers. It's definitely a unique concept and one that has fans intrigued. The game is set to release in 2027.
But perhaps the biggest disappointment of the night was the delay of Tomb Raider: Legacy Of Atlantis. Despite the delay, the game still looks impressive, with stunning visuals and a focus on dinosaurs. And while the story seems to stick close to the original, there's still not much evidence of how the game will handle platforming, which was a major aspect of the earlier Tomb Raider games.
The night also gave us a look at The Lost Wild, a survival game from Annapurna Interactive and new British studio Great Ape Games. This game takes a more scientifically accurate approach to dinosaurs, with feathered creatures and gigantic flying reptiles known as Quetzalcoatlus. And for fans of the Dune franchise, there was the announcement of Dune: Awakening, a survival game and MMO that draws inspiration from both the books and movies.
While it has been available on PC for almost a year, it will finally be making its way to PlayStation 5 this September, along with a new single-player story mode. There were also a few remastered titles announced, such as Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered. And while it may not be the most highly anticipated remaster, it will still be available on Xbox Series X/S and PC at the same time as the PlayStation 5 release.
Last but not least, we have No Rest For The Wicked, a survival game that will be released first on PlayStation 5 in October, with versions for Switch 2 and Xbox coming at a later date. This will be the final 1.0 version of the game, and hopefully, it will improve upon the early access release. The highly anticipated game Tomb Raider: Legacy Of Atlantis will not be released this year, as announced by the recent State of Play event.
However, there were several other exciting announcements made by Sony, including the reveal of Until Dawn 2 and the release dates for some highly anticipated multiformat games such as Onimusha: Way Of The Sword, Silent Hill Townfall, and Ace Combat 8. The State of Play event, which lasted over an hour, may have been one of the longest ones yet, but it unfortunately lacked any major surprises. The biggest reveal of the night was God Of War Laufey, which had been heavily rumored beforehand.
However, this did not take away from the excitement of the actual reveal. In fact, all of the games showcased, whether first or third party, looked incredibly interesting. The event also provided fans with numerous release dates, including those for Silent Hill Townfall, Control Resonant, Ace Combat 8, and Onimusha: Way Of The Sword.
Unfortunately, the much anticipated Tomb Raider: Legacy Of Atlantis also had a release date, but it confirmed previous speculations that the game has been delayed. It is unclear whether this is due to development issues or if the game is trying to avoid going up against the highly anticipated GTA 6, which is rumored to be released in November. However, unlike many other games, Tomb Raider did not opt for a September release date.
One of the highlights of the event was the announcement of Marvel's Wolverine, which is set to be released on September 25. Surprisingly, not much time was spent on the game during the event, leading many to believe that there may be a dedicated State of Play event solely for the game in the future. The game looked incredible, as expected, and also very gory.
Fans were delighted to see a cameo from Jean Grey and the confirmation of villains such as Mystique and Sabertooth. However, the release date was not new information, as it had been previously announced. Another highly anticipated game, Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, also had its release date revealed.
The one-on-one fighter from Arc System Works will be released on August 6 and will feature popular villains such as Doctor Doom, Magneto, Green Goblin, and Carnage. It was also announced that the main antagonist of the game is called the Champion of the Universe. Fans were pleasantly surprised by the announcement of a 3D remake of the 2013 game, Rayman Legends.
The new version, titled Rayman Legends Retold, will be released on October 1 and will feature some new elements while maintaining the same charm as the original. The event also featured some new games, such as Bancho The Chef, a spin-off of the popular game Dave The Diver. The trailer showed a prequel to the main game, showcasing how Bancho became the talented sushi chef players know and love.
However, there was no mention of a release date. One of the biggest surprises of the night was the announcement of Kemuri, the latest game from The Evil Within's Ikumi Nakamura and her new studio, Unseen. The game seems to be a co-op action adventure with a unique twist - players can turn defeated enemies into clothing and use their powers.
The game is set to be released in 2027. Another game that caught fans' attention was The Lost Wild, a survival game featuring scientifically accurate dinosaurs. The game is being developed by a new British studio called Great Ape Games and is set to release in 2027.
Some other games that were featured in the event include Dune: Awakening, a survival game and MMO based on the popular books and movies, and Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered, a remastered version of the classic game. Both games will be released on October 1. Lastly, the event also announced the release date for No Rest For The Wicked, a game that will be exclusive to PlayStation 5 in October, with releases for other platforms coming at a later date.
This will be the final version of the game, which was previously released in early access.
