Newer economies want BRICS to be a positive influence: Jaishankar.

During the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting held in New Delhi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed the growing expectation among emerging markets and developing countries that the BRICS nations will play a positive and stabilizing role in the face of global uncertainties, conflicts, and economic challenges. As the host of the event under India's chairmanship, EAM Jaishankar personally welcomed the foreign ministers and senior diplomats from BRICS member and partner nations and thanked them for their support in the progress of their work.

In his opening address, EAM Jaishankar acknowledged the current state of international relations which is marked by significant changes and instability. He emphasized the importance of the BRICS grouping in this context, stating that there is a rising demand for BRICS nations to contribute to stability and cooperation, especially from emerging markets and developing countries. He also highlighted the opportunity for the discussions to address major global and regional developments and work towards strengthening cooperation among member nations.

The EAM stressed that the development-related issues continue to be at the core of the BRICS agenda. He pointed out the challenges faced by many countries in areas such as energy, food, health, and finance and how BRICS can help address these challenges. He also emphasized the importance of economic resilience and the need for reliable supply chains and diversified markets.

Addressing the issue of climate change, EAM Jaishankar stated that it remains a pressing concern and called for collective efforts towards sustainable development while upholding the principles of equity and differentiated responsibilities. He also highlighted the impact of technological advancements on the global order and encouraged utilizing these developments for good governance and inclusive growth. The EAM also acknowledged the central role of peace and security in the global order and emphasized the need for dialogue and diplomacy in resolving conflicts.

He also called for stronger cooperation in the fight against terrorism. EAM Jaishankar expressed gratitude towards all participating delegations for their support in strengthening cooperation within the BRICS framework. He also stressed the significance of the meeting in exchanging perspectives and developing convergences in a complex and uncertain world.
