Liverpool is rumored to have their eyes on one of Tottenham's top players, in case Spurs get relegated from the Premier League. Currently, Tottenham is in 17th place in the table, just one point above West Ham in the dreaded drop zone. Despite having high expectations for the season, Tottenham has underperformed throughout and even had to let go of their manager Thomas Frank after only eight months.
Although Igor Tudor was appointed as the interim manager until the end of the season, the team's form did not improve under his leadership. Under Tudor, Tottenham lost all of their league games, with four defeats in total. However, they did manage to earn a respectable point in a match against Liverpool at Anfield.
After a damaging 3-0 defeat at home to relegation rivals Nottingham Forest before the March international break, the decision was made to part ways with Tudor after only 44 days. This just goes to show how real the threat of relegation is for Tottenham this season. But there is some hope for Tottenham, as they recently appointed Roberto De Zerbi as their new manager.
The fiery Italian has helped the team make somewhat of a comeback towards the end of the season. After losing his first game to Sunderland, De Zerbi guided Tottenham to seven points in the subsequent games, including a draw with Brighton and wins over Wolves and Aston Villa. However, the threat of relegation still looms over Tottenham, a team that was competing in a Champions League final not too long ago.
If they do get relegated, it could lead to a mass exodus of their talented players. One of the players who could potentially leave is Micky van de Ven, who is considered one of the best defenders in Europe. Liverpool, in particular, has been linked with a move for him, especially since they are in need of defensive reinforcements.
The reigning Premier League champions were close to signing Marc Guehi last summer but ended up losing him to Manchester City in January. When asked about the possibility of Liverpool signing Van de Ven, former Liverpool player Jason McAteer said on the Footy Accumulators No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, "It looks that way. They missed out on Marc Guehi in the summer, and I was a little bit surprised that they let it go to the winter window to try and do the business.
You always bring competition in then; other teams are looking for players in that position, and City have got there before Liverpool. I think they missed out on one there." Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood also believes that Van de Ven would be a good fit for Liverpool. "I think he's the obvious choice on that left side, there aren't many of those about," he said.
"There is one other, Jarrad Branthwaite, but he ain't going to Liverpool, so it opens up the door there for Micky to go in there as a Liverpool player. I think he'd do well for them, I really do; he's got all the attributes to be a top-drawer player. I don't think he's the finished article; he still needs to develop, but he needs to play with someone like Virgil van Dijk.
Those experienced, good players he can look up to because he's not the leader we think he is at the moment, and I think he needs to be shown how to lead. It's a learning curve, and he's still learning, but it's a good option."
