The UK has recently announced new sanctions against organisations and individuals who have been aiding hostile Iranian activity, even going as far as using criminal proxies on British soil. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office made this announcement on Monday, stating that these measures are a direct response to Iran's actions that have threatened global security. This includes their use of criminal gangs to carry out threats around the world.
These sanctions have been specifically designed to target the illicit financial flows that have allowed the Iranian regime to engage in destabilizing actions across West Asia. This includes their blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which has caused disruptions in the global economy, as well as their military strikes against the UK's Gulf allies. UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper emphasized that this package of sanctions is aimed at those who pose a threat to security on UK streets and stability in the Middle East.
Cooper further stated that the UK will not tolerate criminal proxies backed by the Iranian regime who seek to threaten the safety and security of the UK and Europe. Along with other European countries, the UK is coordinating its actions to combat this issue. Cooper also expressed the need for a diplomatic solution in the Middle East that would restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
The sanctions unveiled by the UK this week are specifically targeted at criminal proxies suspected of acting on behalf of the Iranian state. Their goal is to prevent these individuals from entering the UK or accessing assets that finance their illegal activities. The FCDO also stated that these measures align with actions taken by the European Union and build upon previous actions taken by the British government to hold the Iranian regime accountable for their hostile actions.
The entities that have been sanctioned will face an asset freeze and director disqualification. These include Berelian Exchange, GCM Exchange, and the Zindashti Network. In addition, there are also individuals who have been placed on a sanctions list, which includes a travel ban, asset freeze, and director disqualification.
These individuals are Mansour Zarringhalam, Nasser Zarringhalam, Ekrem Abdulkerym Oztunc, Nihat Abdul Kadir Asan, Reza Hamidiravari, and Namiq Salifov. The FCDO stated that these latest actions are in addition to over 550 previous sanctions imposed on Iranian individuals and organisations. This includes sanctions on the entire Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps and over 90 sanctions in response to human rights violations.
This move by the UK shows their commitment to holding the Iranian regime accountable for their actions and promoting global security.
