New storm system in Bay of Bengal could cause heavy rainfall in Odisha until August 17.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a warning on Wednesday, stating that a new low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal could lead to heavy rainfall in Odisha until August 17. According to their latest bulletin, this weather system is expected to become more prominent and move in a northwest direction over the next 48 hours. The IMD stated that this low-pressure area has been formed at around 5:30 am in the North Bay of Bengal, following an upper air cyclonic circulation that occurred yesterday over the northwest region of the Bay of Bengal and its neighboring areas, specifically West Bengal and Bangladesh.

Another bulletin released by the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar has predicted that the state of Odisha will witness a period of consistent rainfall for the next five to six days. The director of the Meteorological Centre, Manorama Mohanty, informed that they have issued an 'orange alert' for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Angul and Keonjhar districts, and a 'yellow alert' for heavy rainfall in all other districts of Odisha. In addition to this, the IMD has also warned of squally weather with wind speeds of 40-50 kmph and gusts up to 60 kmph along the coast of Odisha until August 15.

They have advised fishermen to refrain from venturing into the sea until this date. The bulletin has also highlighted the possibility of flooding in urban areas, waterlogging in low-lying regions, and disruption of traffic in major cities due to heavy rainfall. The IMD has also alerted about the potential of riverine flooding in some catchments until August 17.
