Two barbers from Queensland are being praised for their heroic actions after they intervened in an attempted break-in at a jewellery store on the Gold Coast. According to police, three individuals in a car drove to a shopping center on Foxwell Road in Coomera at around 4:50 pm yesterday. Two of them then entered the complex, a 23-year-old and a 26-year-old, and allegedly used a tyre iron to strike a glass cabinet in an attempt to break it.
Fortunately, the attempted robbery was cut short thanks to the quick thinking of two nearby barbers who were working in the shopping center at the time. One of the barbers, Te Kohu Niwha, described the moment when they decided to intervene, saying, "One of my mates and colleagues, Kai, was just cutting hair when he looked at me and asked if we should go and help out. So, I ran in and bowled the would-be thieves over, using a bit of a rugby league tactic."
Unfortunately, one of the barbers sustained an injury during the struggle and had to be taken to the hospital. Despite this, Niwha stated that their actions were a mix of bravery and foolishness, adding, "We wanted to be the heroes in the story, but we couldn't just stand by and do nothing."
The barbers were not the only ones who stepped in to help. Other shoppers also joined in and together they were able to force the would-be thieves out of the shopping center. The car used in the attempted robbery was later intercepted by the police on Creek Street. According to a bystander, the car had tried to drive over the middle island but got stuck.
The police quickly arrived at the scene and arrested the occupants of the car. A 24-year-old man from Mount Warrant Park, who was allegedly driving the vehicle, was charged with driving without a license, evasion offense in company, willful damage, and entering premises with the intent to commit an indictable offense. The other two occupants, a 23-year-old from Coomera and a 26-year-old from Upper Coomera, were both charged with willful damage and entering premises with the intent to commit an indictable offense.
All three individuals were remanded in custody and were scheduled to appear at Southport Magistrates Court today.
