Varun Mitra got his big break in Bollywood with the 2018 movie Jalebi, even though it wasn't a box office success. Despite that, he kept pursuing his passion for acting, and it paid off. His stellar performance in Guilty Minds launched him into fame. Recently, he was seen in the OTT film Rakshak – India’s Braves, where he plays Lieutenant Triveni Singh. He's also part of the upcoming Kangana Ranaut movie Tejas.
The Free Press Journal got a chance to catch up with the actor for an exclusive chat. When asked if he has a soft spot for roles where his profession plays an integral part, Varun said that he does enjoy the professional space in his characters. He added that it’s fun to play such roles since they have a lot of layers.
Varun was then asked about the roadblocks he faced while playing a real life character. He replied that there was a sense of responsibility since he was in uniform. He was excited to be offered the role and did extensive research to make sure he portrayed it correctly. He was also worried about the reaction of the character’s family, but thankfully, they loved it.
Varun was asked how difficult it was to maintain his graph after his debut movie Jalebi failed. He said that ever since he moved to Mumbai, he’s made sure to only do what he loves. This practice has helped him make his choices, even though it can be tough to turn down work and wait for better opportunities.
The actor also shared his opinion on OTT. He said that even though his movie didn't do well in theaters, it was successful on OTT. He mentioned the advantage of digital platforms, which is that you don't have the pressure of a Friday box office release. He also added that people can watch OTT shows at their own pace and comfort.
Finally, Varun talked about his character in Tejas. He said that he's playing a musician and not a pilot, unlike Kangana Ranaut who is playing an Air Force pilot. He added that his character is introduced in a song sung by Arijit Singh, and his character is in a completely different space.
When asked how he feels about female attention, Varun admitted that he enjoys the attention and it makes him feel good.
