It's an exciting time for Richland School District One in Columbia, South Carolina. For the first time ever, a brother and sister duo will be heading up two of their schools as principals. Dr. Greg Pickett and Dr. Tracy Pickett are entering the new school year ready to take on the challenge.
Tracy is no rookie when it comes to the task, as she's starting her eighth year as Principal of Pine Grove Elementary School. Greg, on the other hand, is heading into his first year at Heyward Gibbes Middle School.
In all the sibling fun, Tracy teases Greg that she's "Dr. Pickett No. 1 and he is 'Dr. Pickett No. 2." Even though he's older, Greg still looks up to his sister and fondly remembers how she used to teach him her school lessons when they were kids. Tracy is still a teacher to him, and she passes on any knowledge that will help him succeed in his new role.
"I would definitely tell him to take one day at a time," Tracy advised. "It's not going to get done in a day, but it will get done. Enjoy the ride and find some joy in it, because if you enjoy what you do you're going to put your whole heart in it. That way you can have some longevity."
Of course, there are times when their opposing ideas and perspectives create a bit of sibling rivalry. But overall, they remain committed to education and their respective communities.
"We're extremely proud of the communities that we serve," Greg said. "We have a deeply personal connection and attachment to these communities, and always put our students first. We focus on student achievement, developing our faculty and staff, and supporting our families and communities."
The brother and sister have a lot of family to thank for inspiring them to pursue a career in education. Their mother and sister were former educators, and their father is a retired instructor in the Army National Guard. It's clear that the Picketts are a family of educators through and through!
