NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders is taking his coaching talents to the University of Colorado Boulder football team this upcoming season. But before Sanders arrived on campus, something else made history: The return of a Black fraternity.

In November 2022, the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity – which had a presence on campus in the 1990s – was welcomed back to CU Boulder. Former Buffaloes center Joshua Jynes, who played for the school from 2018 to 2021, was instrumental in making the fraternity officially register at the university.

When Jynes first arrived on campus, he was surprised to find the fraternity wasn't there. It was his family legacy that prompted him to take action. A phone call from his uncle to De'Ron Jasper, the assistant athletic director and assistant services and operations at CU, kickstarted the process.

Jasper saw Jynes' potential and was confident he could help bring the fraternity back. The three men worked tirelessly to gain provisional status on campus and, after a year of hard work, their efforts paid off in November 2022.

“I think it’s important to have that representation so that students can have the opportunity to pursue,” said Jasper.

Coach Sanders hopes to see more Omega men living on campus and proudly wearing the purple and gold colors.
