On day 2 of the 3rd Test at Headingley in Leeds, England keeper-batter Jonny Bairstow gave a cheeky send-off to Steve Smith. Bairstow, who had been controversially dismissed in the fourth innings of the second Test at Lord's, sledged Smith who was dismissed after whipping one to mid-wicket off Moeen Ali's bowling.
As Smith was walking back to the pavilion, the stump mic picked up Bairstow saying “See ya, Smudge”. Smith was visibly unimpressed and looked at Bairstow with contempt. Smith's 100th Test has been a forgettable one as he managed only 24 runs, with 22 of them coming in the first innings.
Australia's lead was merely 98 when Smith got out and they were soon weakened further as Stuart Broad managed to remove David Warner. However, a 50-run stand between Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne kept them afloat.
Moeen Ali then struck twice to remove Labuschagne and Smith, and soon after Chris Woakes nicked Khawaja for 43. Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head then defended well to get Australia to stumps with a lead of 142 runs. England will need more than 300 in the fourth innings if they are to win.
