Sai loves to cook and is fueled by caffeine!
Sai Tamhankar, the popular actress from Marathi and Hindi films, is a real inspiration. She believes in embracing everything life has to offer and has a unique approach to diet and food. Recently, she spoke to the Free Press Journal about her diet and food habits.

According to her, the best way to maintain a healthy lifestyle is to eat everything in moderation and burn out calories when needed. She starts her day off with a refreshing cup of hot water. For breakfast, she loves to have eggs. She has been known to have eggs for 12 months straight!

Talking about her lunch, Sai is a firm believer in homemade food and loves to have dal, sabzi, roti and salad. Sometimes, she replaces roti with jowar bhakri. She also makes sure to include ghee and curd in her meals, as they are both very nutritious and good for the reproductive system.

Come 6:30 pm and Sai gets really hungry. She considers this her dinner time and loves to indulge in puri bhaji. She avoids fried food and aerated drinks and tries to carry a dabba from home as much as possible.

When it comes to fitness, Sai is quite moody. She follows a mixture of strength training, cardio and kickboxing. When asked about her idea of a romantic meal, she believes that cooking and serving the food together is the best way to show your love.

Sai has also tried the weirdest food combination of ice cream and rice. To her surprise, it was actually quite delicious. Her favourite cook in the family is her grandmother, followed by her mother. She particularly loves the food her mother makes.

When it comes to her favourite restaurants, Indigo Deli is a must-visit, as well as the small joints in Mumbai. She loves the paya soup at the small joint near Malad. She loves Maharashtrian, Indian and European cuisines.

Her favourite drink is coffee, without sugar. She is also a big fan of coconut water and buttermilk during the summer, and green tea and hot chocolate during the winter.

Sai’s advice to readers is to eat everything they like, but in moderation. She believes in eating well and working out harder. To end the conversation, she shared a recipe of Pitla, which is a staple Maharashtrian dish.

To make Pitla, you need 3 tablespoons of oil, 1 teaspoon of mustard and cumin seeds, 1 onion, 8 to 10 cloves of garlic, 1 cup of milk, 1 cup of water, salt to taste, 2 teaspoons of red chilli powder, 1 tablespoon of onion and garlic masala, and a handful of coriander leaves finely chopped. Heat the oil in a kadai, add the mustard and cumin seeds. Once they crackle, add garlic and onions. Saute the onions on a medium flame till light golden, immediately add milk and water. Mix well. Add salt, red chilli powder and onion garlic masala. Immediately start stirring continuously to prevent the milk from curdling. Add coriander leaves and continue to stir. Once it comes to a boil, add the gram flour and keep stirring till you get the desired consistency. Serve hot with bhakri or chapati.

Sai Tamhankar is the perfect example of how one can maintain a healthy lifestyle without depriving themselves of their favourite food. So, go ahead and try her advice!
