Mumbai: Actor-producer Priyanka Chopra Jonas announced on Saturday that Ventilator 2, the sequel to her 2016 Marathi film Ventilator, is in the works, with filmmaker Rajesh Mapuskar returning as both writer and director. The film will be produced under Chopra Jonas’ banner, Purple Pebble Pictures, which also backed the original project. The sequel, produced by Dr Madhu Chopra and Mapuskar under Purple Pebble Pictures and Magij Pictures, is slated for release in 2027.

Sharing the update on Instagram, Chopra Jonas said the original film was one of the key stories she wanted to bring to life when she launched her production house ten years ago. “10 years ago, with @purplepebblepictures, I decided I want to tell stories that mean something. Ventilator was one of those very important stories to us at the company.

A decade later, we’re coming back to it, with so much more,” she wrote. Directed by Mapuskar, the original Ventilator followed the Kamerkar family as they came together at a hospital after an elderly relative was put on a ventilator just before Ganesh Chaturthi. The film balanced humour and emotion while delving into family bonds, generational divides, unresolved conflict and eventual reconciliation.

Featuring an ensemble cast, the Marathi film went on to win three National Film Awards, including Best Director for Mapuskar, Best Editing and Best Sound Mixing. Beyond Ventilator, Purple Pebble Pictures has produced films such as Pahuna: The Little Visitors, Firebrand, Paani, The Sky Is Pink, The White Tiger, To Kill a Tiger and Anuja.
