A Memphis, Tennessee, Popeyes restaurant was recently shut down after a video of a former employee, Tykeia Ransom, went viral on TikTok. The video showed roaches scurrying across surfaces that come into contact with food and other kitchen areas. According to Ransom, the manager of the Popeyes location was aware of the roach infestation but still wanted to serve the food.
Ransom told WREG, "I got fired for the previous video that I had recorded on TikTok." She also discussed the extent of the roach problem, saying, "It’s very bad. It’s everywhere and all in the food you know and everything you can think of. All in the rice."
When Ransom alerted the manager to the problem, things escalated and she was fired. After being contacted by WREG, Popeyes responded swiftly. They sent an e-mail confirming the practice violated their company policy and said they would investigate the issue and close the store until the roach problem was fixed.
Ransom is not interested in getting her job back. She told WREG, "I don’t want my job back because that’s the rudest company I ever worked for." Several customers have expressed their frustrations with the location and the Shelby County Health Department has not responded with any information on when the restaurant will reopen.
To help cover her expenses until she can find another job, Ransom has set up a GoFundMe page. She has also said that she will never work in food service or for Popeyes again. This incident serves as a reminder that companies must take food safety seriously and investigate any potential violations immediately.
