Bhubaneswar: Recently, experts came together to discuss the alarming issue of pollution in our coastal and inland waters. The seminar, titled 'Pollution of Coastal and Inland Waters,' was organized by the Orissa Environmental Society and was chaired by the society's president, Sundar Narayan Patro.

One of the main concerns raised by the experts was the use of polluted water for various purposes such as domestic, commercial, industrial, and agricultural activities, as well as fish and aquaculture farms. They stressed on the fact that this can have severe consequences on public health. Suresh Chandra Misra, a former professor at IIT Kharagpur, was the chief speaker at the event. He explained that the use of polluted water in these sectors can be extremely harmful and can lead to serious health hazards.

Misra further added that most pollutants are carried through the river system, which includes waste from shipping operations, leaked oil, discarded fishing nets, microplastics, and industrial and commercial waste. These pollutants are often dumped into the river channels without proper treatment, which can have a devastating impact on the environment and public health. Misra warned that if immediate action is not taken, our entire living world will suffer from the disastrous consequences of water pollution.

The emphasis was also laid on the need to prevent water pollution without hindering the process of development. Patro, in his speech, highlighted the importance of balancing economic growth and environmental protection.

During the seminar, Jayakrushna Panigrahi, the secretary of OES, also expressed his concerns about the increasing pollution in our water resources. He pointed out that the lack of awareness and sensitivity in society has contributed to this issue, leading to serious health hazards like cancer. Panigrahi highlighted the fact that water is essential for the survival of all living organisms and any changes in our lifestyle, such as industrialization and increased use of technology, have a direct impact on our natural resources.

In conclusion, the experts stressed on the urgent need to take necessary measures to prevent water pollution and protect our environment. They also emphasized the importance of creating awareness and promoting a more sustainable lifestyle to ensure the well-being of our planet and all its inhabitants.
