Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) celebrated World Senior Citizens Day in Vashi last week and announced the plans to start a senior citizen shelter centre soon. NMMC Commissioner Rajesh Narvekar shared the plan and said that the centre will provide temporary accommodation and facilities to senior citizens, and will be a place like home for them.
NMMC has 29 recreational centres for senior citizens across the city and Commissioner Narvekar expressed his pride that NMMC is the first corporation to set up a separate room to provide service facilities to senior citizens. To celebrate the day, 15 senior couples who had completed 50 years of marriage and 75 senior citizens who celebrated their 75th birthday were honoured.
Airoli MLA Ganesh Naik, who was also present at the event, said that Navi Mumbai is the first city to have a dedicated recreational centre for senior citizens. The recreational model was later adopted by other cities and now Navi Mumbai will be the first to start a Senior Citizen Shelter Centre. Belapur MLA Manda Mhatre also expressed her support for the initiative and demanded that the facility should be operational soon.
The senior citizen shelter centre will provide many useful facilities to the senior citizens and will be a great help to those who have to go outside for four to five days and have a question about where to keep their old parents. Commissioner Narvekar said that the children can keep their parents in this centre for a temporary period.
