Residents of Bridgend, Wales are outraged by the inconsiderate parking from parents on the school run. A small cul-de-sac of 19 houses is home to Lon Derw Street, home to the epicenter of the feud which has been raging since 2018.
At pick up times, the street is in mayhem. Dozens of cars line the roads and sidewalks, blocking people into their driveways and creating a dangerous environment for both pedestrians and children. Fed up, mums on the estate took a stand and made a roadblock out of deckchairs in January of last year.
Police have since been monitoring the area, and while it has improved the situation, it isn't enough. Mal Harris, a resident of the street, explains the problem has not been solved and something needs to be done. He says, "We've been dealing with this issue since I moved here in 2018, and there is still no solution to the problem. It's really causing residents to suffer now and we think something has to be done."
Another homeowner on the street even claims that the issue has become so severe, that they are considering moving away. They say, "We have this constant feeling of being watched, and while we feel for parents as they have to park somewhere, there are also cases where there is a complete lack of respect - with people lining the streets, blocking cars in their drives, and generally parking however they want."
Cllr Tim Thomas, who has been dealing with complaints for years, agrees that the council should take action. He says, "I have spoken to many residents living around Brynmenyn Primary, and they are angered that the danger from parking within the school has been migrated into the community."
Bridgend Council, however, has responded by saying that parking restrictions have been put in place on the access road to the school. A spokesperson says, "If any vehicle causes an obstruction by parking inconsiderately on a public highway, it should be reported to South Wales Police so officers can assess whether an obstruction has occurred. Safety is paramount and there are parking restrictions on the access road to the school to assist with road safety and to facilitate access to residential properties in the area."
The council is also encouraging parents and carers to look into alternative options such as active travel routes, which offer safe access to and from the school.
It is clear that something needs to be done about the parking feud at Lon Derw Street. With residents fed up and tensions continuing to rise, the local council must take action to ensure the safety of the children in the area.
