Recently, the National Medical Commission has released a few guidelines concerning the National Exit Test (NExT). This exit test will act as a licentiate and entrance exam for medical students, and serve as a means to certify the eligibility of medical graduates in order to register and practice the modern system of medicine in India.

The NExT will be conducted in two steps, with candidates needing to clear it within ten years of joining the MBBS course. The NMC has confirmed that the notice which has been circulating online regarding the exam being held in the second half of 2023 is false.

The NExT is scheduled to begin with the batch passing out in 2024, with a mock test to be conducted by AIIMS Delhi on July 10. The registration process for the mock test is open and will close on July 10, with nearly one lakh students expected to appear. The registration fee for the mock test is Rs 2,000 for open and OBC category students, Rs 1,000 for SC, ST, and EWS category students, and free of charge for students under the PwBD category.

Candidates who are undergraduate medical students pursuing MBBS in all medical colleges approved by NMC, including Institutes of National Importance, as well as Foreign Medical Graduates who fulfil the requirements of the foreign medical graduate licentiate regulation by NMC for the purpose of obtaining a licence of practising medicine in India as a registered medical practitioner and for enrollement in the state or national register, are eligible for this examination.

Once cleared, they will need to do an internship before they can appear for NExT step 2. All candidates have to clear NExT within ten years of joining the MBBS course.
