So I've finally finished Hogwarts Legacy and let me tell you, it was a journey. Countless hours, pointless side quests, and one challenging Merlin Trial later, I can finally say I've completed the main story. And while I did enjoy my time with the game, I have to admit, it's far from perfect.
Where do I even begin? Let's start with the Merlin Trials. What's the deal with those? They're completely pointless and a waste of time. I only did one trial, just to see what it was all about, and then ignored it completely. I mean, why should I bother expanding my gear slots when the rewards are just useless clothing items?
Don't get me wrong, Hogwarts itself is a beautiful centerpiece. But there's no real requirement to actually be there or even care about it. You can skip days, skip classes, and even venture far away from the castle without any consequences. And let's not forget about the countless stairs, lifeless students, and repetitive dialogue scattered throughout the castle.
Speaking of classes, they're a joke. Just two minutes long and you learn a new spell, never to use it again. It's like they were just thrown in there for show. And let's be real, most of your time is spent doing assignments outside of Hogwarts rather than attending classes or actually caring about the school.
The Summoner's Court and the dueling club are also a major disappointment. They only last for about five minutes and are never brought up again. You can't even attend the feasts, not even the end of year one. And what's the deal with no house points? And don't even get me started on the Unforgivable Curses. You can cast them as many times as you want with no consequences. And Azkaban? Just an afterthought with no repercussions at all. And let's not forget about the fact that we have to wait for another game to even play Quidditch, and probably pay extra for it. Shameful.
Oh, and the rewards for completing dungeons? Just more useless clothing items. And don't even get me started on the Forbidden Forest. It's just filled with the same enemies over and over again - spiders, trolls, and poachers. They're just bullet sponges and it becomes tedious and boring.
Even the enemies themselves are repetitive, with the same lines repeated over and over again. And the characters, like Harlow and Rookwood, are just plain boring. Their fights last less than five minutes. And don't even get me started on the final fight, it was just plain boring. Even the professors are forgettable.
And what's the deal with the beasts aspect of the game? It serves no real purpose other than introducing Poppy, who I actually liked. But she's only there for her questline and then forgotten about. Same goes for Natty and Sebastian. I really liked Sebastian as a companion, but now that his story is over, I'll never be able to speak to him again. And what's the point of the common rooms? You visit them once and then they become completely worthless.
They're empty, you can't even sleep in your own bed, and there's no motivation to even visit them. Sure, they look nice and it's a great way to meet the three best Slytherin characters - Ominis, Imelda, and Sebastian. But ultimately, choosing Slytherin as my house was pointless because you're still locked down as the hero of Hogwarts and can't actually be evil.
And remember how I said there were no consequences? Yeah, let's talk about that. No one even bats an eye when you use Avada Kedavra. Only Sebastian faces any consequences, but even then, it's not really addressed. I didn't even expose him and it was never brought up again. Just a final conversation with him and that's it.
Overall, Hogwarts Legacy was a good game, but it could have been great. I really hope the developers take note of the criticisms and make improvements for a potential sequel. I'd love to continue the journey of my character, Marguerite Vasilisa.
And on a final note, what's up with not even taking our O.W.L.s? We'll never know our career path, but hey, we did win the House Cup. Too bad it's completely pointless. But hey, at least we can sign up for exclusive gaming content and get updates on the latest releases before they're even announced!
