JJ Slater, 31, was in for the shock of his life when he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The Married At First Sight star had been experiencing some unusual symptoms, such as being thirsty, needing to go to the bathroom multiple times in the night, and feeling lightheaded. On top of this, he was losing weight without changing his diet or exercising any differently.
When JJ was told he wouldn’t get the results of his blood test until after Christmas, he woke up the next morning to three missed calls from the hospital saying he needed to go in right away. He said, “I have never woken up so quickly. I panicked thinking it was the worst news.”
Type 1 diabetes is a life-changing disease. It occurs when there is an insufficient amount of the hormone insulin, which controls blood glucose levels. Those with the disease will need to take insulin to regulate their sugar levels for life.
