Man confesses to taking watches worth £42,000 from King's relative.
On Friday, Matthew Turner appeared in Cheshire Magistrates court to answer to charges of burglary between August 7 and August 31, 2022. The 24-year-old painter and decorator from Great Sutton had been hired to redecorate some of the rooms at Eaton Hall, the residence of the Duke of Westminster, Hugh Grosvenor.

However, Turner had done more than paint the walls. He had taken advantage of being in the residence to sneak into the Duke's bedroom and help himself to three watches worth £42,000 in total. This included a £30,000 Cartier London Tank JC wristwatch, a £6,000 Panerai Luminor Marina watch and a £6,000 Breitling watch.

The Duke had not realised that his watches were missing until he was looking for the Cartier to wear. Turner also admitted to a sneak theft of £60 from a tyre shop and was bailed for the preparation of background reports.

At the same hearing, Nathan Elliot, 30, of Whitby, Ellesmere Port was charged with the handling of the stolen Cartier but pleaded not guilty and will face trial. The prosecutor, Scott Woodward, stated that the Crown believes that the charge of domestic burglary is not suitable to be dealt with in this court as the value of the burglary is £42,000, a significant amount.

Turner's lawyer, Steven Alis, agreed that the starting point of sentencing is 12 months, but did not confirm that this is the sentence Turner will receive. Turner is expected to be sentenced following Elliot's trial.
