Josephine, 93, fights to protect her family's historical home from land developers.
Josephine Wright, a 93-year-old woman from Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, is facing harassment from developers looking to buy her family land. Wright's family has owned the Jonesville Road property since just after the Civil War, and it was acquired by her husband's relatives who were of Gullah Geechee descent.

The land is being developed by Bailey Point Investment Group according to a 29-acre comprehensive, 147-unit plan. Unfortunately, Wright's home sits in the way of their progress and she has been offered to sell the land. Wright, who has been a fighter all her life, has refused their offer and has accused the developers of harassing her in order to get her to sell. She says her tires have been slashed, trash has been thrown in her yard, and even a snake was hung in her window.

"It puzzled me at first, but then it got me angry," Wright stated. "I guess they figured I would become so unnerved with the harassment that I would say take it. But they don’t know me. I am here to fight for what I have. I want to just keep my property and them to leave me alone."

Wright went on to say, "I don’t want to say anything that can be used against me, but I think they are unscrupulous and greedy, and they want all the property they can get their hands on."

Bailey Point Investment Group eventually filed a lawsuit against Wright, claiming that portions of her home were on their owned property. Wright refused this claim and hired a lawyer to help her fight against the wrongful lawsuit. To assist her with her growing legal expenses, her family started a GoFundMe.

The Jonesville Preservation Society was created in order to preserve Hilton Head Island’s native and historical past. A member of the Jonesville Preservation Society, Kelly LeBlanc, told WSAV that the town is looking closely at the permitting and approval phase of the project.

The media and community attention to Wright's struggle has sparked, and she remains determined to fight for her family land. Wright is a true fighter and will not let her home go without a fight.
