Alexis Mac Allister declined to take Liverpool's No. 8 shirt as a sign of respect for Steven Gerrard.
Alexis Mac Allister recently completed his move to Liverpool from Brighton earlier in June and was unveiled wearing the No.10 shirt, the same one he had at Brighton.
However, the Argentine midfielder has now revealed that he could have chosen an even more iconic Liverpool shirt to wear: the No.8 made famous by club legend Steven Gerrard.

In an interview with The Mirror, Mac Allister said that he was talking to his dad when he asked him what number he would wear for Liverpool.

He said: “I knew there were several numbers available – including 10 and 8. The No.8 shirt is a very important number in that club because of Gerrard, so I hesitated a bit. I ended up choosing the 10, but 8 is a number that I like a lot and has a history at the club.”

Gerrard made the No.8 shirt the most famous in Liverpool’s history. He wore it from 2004 to 2015 and it was deemed so special that no player would wear it again until Naby Keita in 2018.

However, Keita struggled during his five-year spell at Anfield and is leaving this summer to join Werder Bremen on a free. In related news, Reds forward Darwin Nunez looks set to switch from the No.27 shirt to No.9 which has been vacated by the departing Roberto Firmino.

Mac Allister is no doubt hoping to make the No.10 shirt his own at Liverpool and have the same success as some of the other club greats who have worn it in the past, such as John Barnes, Michael Owen and most recently Sadio Mane.

It is an iconic shirt number with a lot of weight and history and the 24-year-old has certainly made an admirable decision to honour the legacy of Gerrard by turning down the chance to wear the No.8 shirt.
