Kindred, a company dedicated to supporting Black families and communities, has announced their first-ever Best Cities for Black Families Awards. On June 23, they released a list of 15 cities that are ideal for the livelihoods of Black children.
Celeste Little, the editorial lead for Kindred, explained the importance of the awards. She said, “For Black families, abundance is a careful calculation, because too often being Black is a caveat to the factors that make American cities worthwhile.”
Little noted that due to a history of racism, it is essential to survey locations that are safe and joyful for Black people. She added, “We must have a nuanced understanding of culture to build lasting legacies of wealth and education.”
To create the list, Kindred assembled a panel of judges including psychologists, educators, finance experts, and dietitians. Their votes were based on factors such as wealth acquisition, environmental justice and equity, and communal and safety infrastructure.
Silver Spring, Maryland emerged as the best overall city, with the other top contenders being Atlanta, San Francisco, and New York City. Other cities were selected for more specific categories such as Honolulu, Hawaii for Environmental Equity and Raleigh, North Carolina for Wealth Building.
