Mumbai: A jail constable of Arthur Road prison has been dismissed from service after he was caught attempting to smuggle ganja inside the prison. According to jail officials, Vivendra Naik, a Mumbai Central Jail staffer, was on night shift duty on October 6 when Jail Officer Deepak Suryaji Sawant suspected something hidden in his innerwear.
Naik was then escorted to the office of the Jail Superintendent and a body search was conducted in his presence. It led to the discovery of eight capsules inside a plastic container in his innerwear, one of which contained a ganja-like substance weighing 71 grams. A case was registered against Naik under the relevant sections of the NDPS Act and he was arrested.
Following his arrest, Additional Director General of Police and Inspector General Prisons and Correctional Service, Maharashtra State, dismissed him from service in accordance with the law. This incident comes shortly after two inmates were arrested for sodomy in Mumbai's Arthur Road Jail. The jail has also recently started a video call facility for foreign inmates.
