Kamirria Wallace, a Howard University graduate and entrepreneur, is actively working to bring higher education to the Black community with her fashion brand, Black & Scholared. Although enrollment rates of Black students in higher education have increased from 17.9% in 2010 to 22.6% in 2023, they still fall short of the national average of 32.9%.
Kamirria started Black & Scholared in 2020 with the mission to build an HBCU legacy for her daughters. The collections range from apparel such as sweatshirts, t-shirts, and hoodies to accessories like totes, hats, and alums lapel pins. But that's not all. To nurture aspirations for higher education in the younger generation, Black & Scholared also offers a youth collection.
For Kamirria, the business is more than just a fashion line. She is passionate about helping Black students realize their dreams of higher education. To do this, she has set up a scholarship fund to help students with tuition and living costs. She also donates a portion of their profits to the HBCU partners. Currently, the company works with seven HBCUs, including Howard University, Morgan State University, Norfolk State University, North Carolina A&T State University, Hampton University, Virginia State University, and Texas Southern University. However, Kamirria has plans to expand to include more HBCUs.
In just three years, Black & Scholared has reached over 500K scholars and contributed over $30,000 to the HBCU community. It is currently sold online and in major retail stores like Foot Locker and Barnes & Noble College HBCU campus bookstores.
Kamirria's vision is to inspire and empower the Black community to strive for higher education. With her fashion brand, she is actively working to bridge the gap between Black students and higher education. To learn more about Black & Scholared, visit their website at BlackandScholared.com.
