Today, November 19, marked the 38th foundation day of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). Vinai Kumar Saxena, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, was present as the chief guest of the event and called on the university to leverage the latest technologies such as robotics, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality to meet international standards. He also emphasized the need for vocational training and student upskilling for comprehensive student development in the future.
In his address, Mr. Saxena said, “IGNOU stands tall, as a beacon of knowledge and academic excellence in the field of inclusive education and distance learning, delivering a flexible, learner-centric, cost-effective and high-quality education.” He added that equal weight must be placed on both the curriculum and extracurricular activities for the development of graduates who are both globally and locally competent.
IGNOU was established in 1985, and is renowned for part-time and distance learning in India. It started out with just two programs and a student body of about 4,500, and has since grown to serve over three million students both in India and overseas. It has 67 regional centers, 21 schools, and 29 partner institutions abroad. It offers more than 200 programs at the certificate, diploma, degree, and doctorate levels. It holds two admission cycles, one in January and one in July, with registration openings in November and May-June respectively.
On this special foundation day, the university inaugurated an exhibition, which was opened by the honorable Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. As the celebration came to an end, the Supreme Court asked the Centre and IGNOU to provide their views on the UGC’s plea regarding the regulation of distance education programmes.
