Max Dowman has made history by becoming the youngest-ever goalscorer in the Premier League. The 16-year-old prodigy caught the eye of many, including Chelsea legend John Terry, after his impressive performance in Arsenal's 2-0 win against Everton on Saturday. Despite a tense game at the Emirates Stadium, Dowman's introduction in the 74th minute gave the Gunners a much-needed boost.
His cross led to Viktor Gyokeres' goal in the 89th minute, and then Dowman himself scored a brilliant solo effort in injury time to secure the win for Arsenal. Terry, who had already seen Dowman play against Chelsea's academy side last year, was full of praise for the young midfielder in a TikTok video after the game. "Max Dowman, what a player by the way," he said.
"16 years of age, absolutely incredible. I've not seen anyone glide past people like this man does, other than Messi." The former Chelsea captain also predicted a bright future for Dowman, saying he will play a big part in Arsenal's future and potentially even for England. "Super, super talent," Terry added.
"Big, big win for them today." Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta also had high praise for Dowman's performance. "Yesterday he was training and in the last few days, and I had a gut feeling that it was a moment for him," he said. "Probably because he doesn't seem to be fazed by the occasion or the moment or the context or the opponent.
He just plays so naturally. He makes decisions to make things happen and what he delivered was incredible." Arteta also highlighted Dowman's character and personality, saying he doesn't seem to be fazed by pressure or his teammates or opponents. "I've seen a lot of players with talent, but at 16, very few that can cope with that level of demand," he added.
Dowman's stunning goal and overall performance not only made him the youngest-ever goalscorer in the Premier League, but it also earned him praise from top football figures and cemented his place as a rising star in the world of football. As Metro's Head of Sport James Goldman puts it, Dowman's talent and potential make him a player to keep an eye on for the future. And with his impressive display against Everton, it's clear that he has a bright football career ahead of him.
