Former co-captain charged with assault months after video of riverboat beatdown went viral.
Law officials have been tight-lipped in regards to the pending assault charges against the Riverboat co-captain involved in the viral Montgomery riverboat brawl in August.
Court records indicate Harriott II co-captain, Dameion Pickett, is being charged with third-degree assault. The charges were filed in the Montgomery Municipal Court on October 26th, however, no official public announcement has been made by either the Montgomery police or the city attorney.
The incident sparked a flurry of activity on Black Twitter on August 5th, 2023. Footage of the fight shows it started at Montgomery’s Riverfront Park when the Harriott II crew members attempted to dock the cruise boat, only to be blocked by a pontoon boat. Pickett, a Black man, was then attacked by a group of white passengers. Other Black people witnessing the attack came to his defense, including a 16-year-old deckhand.
Pickett’s mother, Crystal Warren, reported to the police that her son had been called racial slurs during the brawl. However, she later changed her statement in court.
In a court appearance in late October, pontoon boat occupant Richard Roberts pled guilty to two misdemeanor charges and apologized to Pickett. He even stated his belief that under different circumstances, they could have been friends.
In addition, Zachery "Chase" Shipman, the complainant listed in Pickett’s case, is facing a third-degree assault charge in connection with the brawl. Shipman claims he was defending himself and suffered a bruised cheekbone from a punch Pickett allegedly threw. Out of the five defendants, two have pleaded guilty to their roles in the fight.
Roberts was given a four-month suspended sentence with 32 days to be served on weekends in Perry County Jail, 100 hours of community service, and court costs.
The Montgomery Riverboat Brawl has become a widely discussed topic. In response, two Black Professors have created a curriculum guide to provide further education surrounding the event.
