Escapee from Cuttack jail during Durga Puja celebrations in 2025, Raja Sahani, has been arrested in Rishikesh by Odisha Police, confirms DGP.

Police in Odisha have caught another prisoner who had escaped from custody and was hiding in Rishikesh.

On Thursday, the Odisha Police successfully apprehended an undertrial prisoner who had escaped from the Choudwar Circle Jail in Cuttack during last year's Durga Puja celebrations. According to a statement by Odisha DGP Y B Khurania, the prisoner, named Raja Sahani, was arrested in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand. The DGP further added that Sahani is currently being brought back to Odisha by a police team from Cuttack for further investigation.

This comes after another undertrial prisoner, Madhukanta Kumar, was arrested from an ashram in Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh, earlier this year. Both Sahani and Kumar, who are from Bihar, had escaped from the high-security jail on the night of October 2-3, while they were in custody for a dacoity and murder case in Jajpur district. According to a senior police official, after their escape, the duo had gone to Puri for a few days before splitting up.

It seems that they had planned to seek refuge in holy places due to the large number of people there. They had also changed their appearance and worked in guest houses as attendants, serving devotees. Sahani had even traveled to Nepal before making his way to Rishikesh.

However, the police's special team was able to track Sahani down and successfully apprehend him. This is a major victory for the Odisha Police, as Sahani's escape had been a cause of concern since last year. With his arrest, both undertrial prisoners have been brought back into custody, ensuring the safety and security of the public.
