Late Tuesday night in Punjab's Amritsar, near the army cantonment area in Khasa, an explosion occurred, the second incident of its kind in a span of three hours. The first blast had taken place outside the headquarters of the Border Security Force's Punjab Frontier in Jalandhar around 8 pm, followed by the explosion in Amritsar at approximately 11 pm. The police have stated that investigations are currently underway for both incidents and thankfully, no injuries have been reported so far.
Senior Superintendent of Police Suhail Mir Qasim of Amritsar stated that they received reports of a loud sound around 11 pm on a road in Khasa. "Our teams arrived at the scene immediately," he said. Preliminary investigations revealed that an explosive device had been thrown towards the boundary wall, causing the explosion.
The blast also caused a piece of tin sheet covering the wall to fall off, as observed by the police. A team of forensic and bomb disposal experts visited the site to collect samples, along with the Amritsar Rural Superintendent of Police Aditya S. Warrier, who is leading the ongoing investigation.
The area was cordoned off by the police and a team of army officials also assessed the situation. CCTV footage from the vicinity of the blast shows the explosion occurring at night. A local villager shared that his family was awakened by the loud sound and went outside to see what had happened.
The footage also captured an unidentified man running for cover after the blast. The explosion caused significant damage, ripping apart a scooter, damaging a traffic signal pole, and shattering windowpanes of a nearby shop. According to locals, the scooter belonged to Gurpreet Singh, who regularly delivers parcels in the area.
Gurpreet's relative shared with reporters that the scooter caught fire as he was approaching it, and he immediately informed his father about the incident. Jalandhar Police Commissioner Dhanpreet Kaur confirmed that an Activa scooter parked near the gate caught fire suddenly and that Gurpreet is fully cooperating with the investigation. Witnesses nearby reported hearing a loud sound following the explosion.
This is not the first explosion in the state of Punjab in recent times. On April 27, an explosion occurred at a freight corridor rail track in Shambhu in Patiala, leading to the arrest of four members of a pro-Khalistan terror module, backed by Pakistan's ISI. The opposition parties have condemned the AAP government for its handling of the situation, with Shiromani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Singh Badal stating that the Chief Minister, who also holds the home portfolio, is too preoccupied with mimicry and cheap politics to take action.
Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring also criticized the government for their failure to prevent such incidents and demanded accountability and immediate action.
