It’s set to be another incredible week in the capital, and we’ve got the scoop on all the best things to do in London. From afternoon tea spots to gin clubs, and from art exhibitions to musical events, there’s something for everyone this week.
Food and Drink
We’re talking teapots filled with booze, baskets of Singaporean dumplings, and cake trolleys groaning with delicious patisserie. Or you could just go to Morley’s, and sample a collaboration for the chicken-loving ages. Morley’s first landed in London back in 1985, and its unique brand of cheekiness and invention have made it a cult favourite. Morley’s have collaborated with Heinz to celebrate their new Fried Chicken Sauce, and promote elevated chicken-centric dining. Check out the inspired results at The Standard.
Napoli on the Road is the latest addition to the Richmond restaurant scene, and its pizzas are to die for. The range of Signature pizzas by Head Chef and founder Michele Pascarella are exemplary. The Fillet Tartare combines fior de latte, baby mixed leaf, beef fillet tartare, crushed hazelnuts and Amalfi lemon olive oil. Pizzas from £10.95, 12 Red Lion Street, Richmond.
Mr Fogg’s Hat Tavern and Gin Club is the latest addition to the Soho franchise, with its freshly opened hat factory and gin club. The hatter’s setting provides genuinely original décor, and the sense of idiosyncrasy and tailoring extends neatly to the cocktail menu. Highlights include the gingery Ushanka and the dandelion and burdock tinged Tam O’Shanter. Cocktails from £10, 22 Great Chapel Street, Soho.
Culture
Get ready for a whole new world as Illusionaries, a multi-sensory art ‘odyssey’ designed to stimulate pure awe, has opened in Canary Wharf. This season’s exhibition, Memories of a Dead Poet, is the work of Arash Irandoust, whose strange, cacophonous compositions generate cogent ideas from apparently unrelated particulars. Illusionaries also works as pure, magical spectacle, with its crystal sharp projections and careful reflections giving the impression that you’re floating around the galleries. From £27, Crossrail Place, Canary Wharf.
The new National Portrait Gallery reopening stars a new exhibition of the pioneering Yevonde. Between the wars, Yevonde developed colour portrait photography in her famous Berkeley Square studio, using mainly female subjects and playing with some pretty surreal settings. Look out for an especially whacky staging of notable contemporary women as figures from classical mythology. St. Martin’s Place, Westminster. ‘Yevonde: Life and Colour’ until 15 October.
Theatre and Music
The Crown Jewels is a disheartening example of an underpar work given an oversized platform. Al Murray and Mel Giedroyc do some entertaining ad-libbing but there’s a whiff of desperation – that of talented performers doing their very best to keep the show on the road in the absence of a workable script. Tickets from £20, until 16 September, Garrick Theatre, 2 Charing Cross Road, Soho.
The Crystal Palace Bowl is a modernist extravaganza of a performance space, projecting thumping pop and rock across the park’s lake and into the fields. Hippyish and exciting, it’s the perfect venue for South Facing festival. Still yet to come in its eclectic schedule are Primal Scream, Craig David, and Sister Sledge. Adult tickets from £25.70, until 13 August, Crystal Palace Park, Ledrington Road.
