Eight people were arrested for protecting those who smuggle cattle, and authorities confiscated weapons and vehicles used for the illegal activity.

In Sundargarh district, authorities have made a major breakthrough by arresting eight individuals who were posing as self-proclaimed cow protectors. It was revealed that these men were actually secretly aiding cattle smugglers and extorting money from them. The police were able to seize two firearms, 10 rounds of ammunition, and two cars from the suspects, making it a significant operation.

Superintendent of Police Amrit Pal Kaur stated that the group had been publicly opposing cattle smuggling, but behind closed doors, they were providing protection to the smugglers in exchange for monetary gain. This deception was uncovered late Wednesday night and disclosed to the public during a press briefing at the Bargaon police station on Thursday. The police received information about the illegal transportation of approximately 150 cattle from Chhattisgarh through Bargaon to Khatkurbahal in Kutra block.

Acting swiftly, a special team led by SDPO Bibhuti Bhushan Bhol conducted a raid near Jarangloi and successfully apprehended the suspects who were escorting the smugglers. Along with the arrests, the police were able to seize a knife and eight mobile phones. Thanks to the prompt action of the police, a total of 105 cattle were rescued and moved to a local shelter, ensuring their safety.

A case has been registered against the suspects, and further investigation is currently underway. This incident has once again highlighted the ongoing issue of cattle smuggling and the need for strict measures to combat it. Orissa POST, Odisha's No.1 English Daily, will continue to provide updates on this case as more information becomes available.
