Wendy's manager gets Yale scholarship thanks to supportive boss.

Thalles Winner DeSouza has an incredible story of overcoming adversity and achieving academic success. Originally from Brazil, he had to flee his home country due to the violence caused by guns. He eventually found his way to the United States, where he worked as a shift manager at Wendy's.

But, thanks to the support and generosity of two franchise owners, DeSouza is now on his way to Yale University on a full scholarship. DeSouza's journey to Yale began when franchise owners Usama El-Sehrawey and the late Ernest Smily noticed his hard work and dedication at their Cape Cod Wendy's location. They saw potential in DeSouza and encouraged him to pursue higher education instead of leaving for a higher-paying construction job.

This encouragement and support continued throughout his time at Wendy's, with the franchise owners setting aside money based on his hours of work. In the end, they were able to cover three years of tuition at Cape Cod Community College. DeSouza's academic achievements during his time at Cape Cod Community College were nothing short of impressive.

He maintained straight A's, started a religious club on campus, and served as the student body president for two years. After transferring to Bunker Hill Community College, he set his sights on Yale University. And despite the odds, DeSouza was accepted into Yale, a university that only admits around 2% of transfer applicants.

DeSouza's story is even more remarkable when considering his background. He and his family immigrated to the United States in 2016, and at the time, he didn't even speak English. But now, thanks to his determination and hard work, he has been awarded a full scholarship to Yale worth over $194,500.

He plans to major in political science, with a minor in human rights, and ultimately pursue a career in law. When reflecting on his journey, DeSouza acknowledges the impact that El-Sehrawey and Smily had on his life. They saw something in him and believed in his potential, and he is forever grateful for their support.
