Calcutta HC acquits convicts of gangrape & murder of Kamduni victim; family & CID likely to appeal in SC.
Kolkata was rocked on Friday with the Calcutta High Court acquitting the three accused in the horrific Kamduni gangrape and murder case that took place a decade ago. The state CID and the family of the victim have indicated that they will move Supreme Court, as they are not happy with the High Court's order.

The incident occurred on 7th June, 2013, when a 21 year old girl was attacked and gangraped in an open ground in Kamduni. Her body was found in a water body with signs of sexual assault. This case was one of the first to follow the Nirbhaya incident in Delhi.

In 2016, the sessions court had awarded capital punishment to Amin Ali, Saiful Ali, and Ansar Ali, and life imprisonment to Imanul Islam, Aminul Islam and Bholanath Naskar. However, on Friday the High Court's division bench comprising Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Ajay Kumar Gupta acquitted Imanul Islam, Aminul Islam and Bholanath Naskar with the condition of personal bonds of Rs 10,000 each. They also observed that the three had already served 10 years of imprisonment.

The verdict was met with shock and disappointment by civil activists Mousumi Kayal and Tumpa Kayal. Mousumi, who was in tears outside the court premises, said that "Our Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had promised speedy justice and strict punishment of the culprits. She had failed to keep both promises. Strict punishment was needed to set an example so that such a crime doesn't take place in our state. The government lawyers have sold themselves."

The brother of the victim also said that they will move to the President of India if necessary.

The court also ordered a second autopsy of a BJP leader who was allegedly killed by TMC goons.
