Starfield not as good as Mass Effect according to Reader's Feature.
For many gamers, the release of Starfield, Bethesda's newest title, was a much anticipated event. Unfortunately, it has failed to live up to expectations and has been heavily compared to the popular Mass Effect trilogy.

I've been playing Starfield on Game Pass recently and personally, I find it to be just okay. It's not terrible, but it didn't really capture my attention and I felt that it could have been so much better.

Starfield has been likened to a combination of Fallout, Skyrim, Mass Effect and No Man's Sky. While the similarities to Fallout and Skyrim are obvious, the connection to No Man's Sky is also quite evident, with the planet exploration mechanics being almost identical. The major difference is that in Starfield, the planets are just generic rocks and woods, and you can't fly your ship on the surface. This has been a major source of criticism as Starfield is supposed to be a big budget game, while No Man's Sky is a small indie title.

However, even Mass Effect doesn't have the ability to fly from space to planet. The similarities between the two games don't end there either. In Starfield, one of the first things you do is to touch an artefact and get a trippy hallucination, which is very much like a scene from Mass Effect. And when you look a bit deeper, you notice that almost everything from combat to characters and story is just a slightly inferior version of Mass Effect.

The biggest difference between the two games is in the combat. Starfield's combat isn't bad, but it's not great either. Mass Effect's combat, on the other hand, feels great, and it's no surprise that they made a multiplayer mode for it. Not only is the third person combat snappy and still enjoyable today, but it's nothing compared to how much better the characters and story are in Mass Effect. You can never remember anyone's name in Starfield, but Mass Effect's party members like Garrus, Tali, Liara, Miranda and Mordin are memorable and you want to know more about them. The romance options are cheesy, but they're fun and earned.

Mass Effect is also much more charming. For example, the clubs in Mass Effect are cheesy and nerdy, but they look and sound like real clubs. Starfield's club, on the other hand, looks sanitised and lame. The dialogue is also better in Mass Effect, and it's a shame that Bethesda still has that old-fashioned one-person-on-screen thing going on.

All in all, I'm not very impressed with Starfield. Skyrim in space sounded like a great idea, but it has failed to evolve over the last 12 years and Mass Effect is still much better.
