In a bustling district known as Sweet Auburn, the Atlanta Municipal Market continues to thrive as a hub for small businesses. As city leaders and entrepreneurs work to create more opportunities for local business owners, The Atlanta Voice reported an exciting development: several new businesses are setting up shop at the historic public marketplace, including multiple ventures owned by Black women. On June 5, a ribbon-cutting ceremony and market tour were held to celebrate the recent openings of four businesses inside the market.
One of these new additions is A Taste of Secrets, a Jamaican-Puerto Rican fusion restaurant founded by chefs Niddy Rodriguez and Miish Hudson. Offering a unique menu that combines flavors from both cultures, the restaurant is set to open on June 13. Guests can look forward to dishes such as seafood empanadas, oxtail, curry chicken, and beef.
According to Rodriguez, the market's rich history and central location were major factors in choosing the site for their business. "The Atlanta Municipal Market is a beloved gathering place for locals," she shared with the outlet. Hudson added that the building's historical significance also played a role in their decision.
Another exciting new addition is Dolce Tropical, a juice-and-shake bar owned by Latasha Smith. After a successful soft launch on June 3, the business is now open and serving up refreshing fruit-based drinks, milkshakes, ice cream sundaes, and tropical lemonade. Smith's inspiration for the concept came from her daughter, Jordan, and the beverage vendors she encountered at the Santa Monica Pier in California.
Before settling at the market, they operated at fairs and other public events. Smith expressed her excitement for the market's diverse customer base and supportive atmosphere, stating, "This is an amazing opportunity for us. I wanted to bring these flavors to Atlanta." Other businesses expected to open soon include Edgewood Pizza and The Retro Grill, owned and operated by entrepreneur Kheli Archer.
The Atlanta Municipal Market has been a beloved fixture for decades, serving as a destination for food vendors, retailers, and small businesses. According to Greg Clay, deputy chief of staff in the office of Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, the market is an institution in the city and the new businesses represent a continued investment in its success. Miss D, owner of Miss D's Gourmet Candy which also operates at the market, shared her enthusiasm for the growth and development of the market and its impact on the community.
"It's a win-win for everyone," she said. "It's great for the community and for the entrepreneurs who are getting their start." With this exciting news, it's clear that the Atlanta Municipal Market will continue to be a thriving and beloved destination for years to come.
