"BBC murder mystery gains popularity on Netflix top 10 list after being added without much fanfare."

Based on Tana French's novels, the story takes place in Ireland.

The popular BBC murder mystery show from 2019, "The Dublin Murders," has recently been added to Netflix's top 10 series, landing at number four today. This Irish crime drama, starring Sarah Greene and Killian Scott, was quietly added by the streamer earlier this month and has already been gaining popularity among viewers. The series follows detectives Rob Reilly and Cassie Maddox as they work for an elite murder squad in Dublin.

The BBC synopsis sets the scene: "When a young, talented ballerina is found dead on an ancient stone altar, her death brings up another tragedy that occurred years before. Three children disappeared into the local woods and only one returned." With a gripping storyline and talented cast, it's no surprise that this series has been a hit. Set in the outskirts of Dublin, "The Dublin Murders" is based on the novels of Tana French, a well-known crime novelist and New York Times bestselling author.

While the series was originally released in 2019, it has just been added to Netflix, giving viewers the chance to delve into its dark and twisty world. Creator Sarah Phelps describes the two lead characters, Reilly and Maddox, as "friends and it's not a sexual thing." Since the series landed on Netflix, viewers have been raving about its dark and gripping storyline, leading to an audience score of 78% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have also praised the series, with Observer calling it "atmospheric, often terrific, never dull viewing" and ScreenRant describing it as a "satisfyingly dark and twisty crime thriller." The show delves heavily into the relationship between Reilly and Maddox, and the impact of the murders on their personal lives.

The series is based on two of French's books, "In the Woods" and its follow-up, "The Likeness." While the show's title may suggest a Dublin setting, much of it was actually shot in Belfast and surrounding areas of Northern Ireland. The woods where the murders take place were filmed in Tollymore Forest, a popular filming location known for its appearances in "Game of Thrones" and "Dracula Untold." For scenes set in the 1980s, the nearby village of Drumaness was utilized, with 80s-era Garda vars, green post boxes, and ice cream vans making an appearance. In an interview with the BBC, creator Sarah Phelps shared her admiration for French's novels and the compelling storyline that drew her to adapt them for television.

She also revealed that there is a "huge spoiler" that ties Reilly and Maddox together, something "deep and dark" that has affected them their entire adult lives. Lead actress Sarah Greene, who plays Cassie Maddox, described filming for the series as "pretty heavy" and revealed that it had gotten under her skin. She credited the show's advisor for helping her and Scott get into the mindset of hard-boiled detectives.

"When you see a body, you have to get up close and look for details while setting your emotions aside. How do you tell a family that something has happened to a loved one?" she shared in an interview with Hot Press. "The Dublin Murders" is now available to stream on Netflix and BBC iPlayer.

If you're a fan of gripping crime dramas with a unique twist, this series is a must-watch. And for more updates on all things Netflix, be sure to sign up for Metro's TV Newsletter and get personalized news on your favorite shows delivered straight to your inbox.
