In a recent interview, the legendary Sir Tom Jones opened up about the changes he has noticed in his voice as he ages. The 84-year-old Welsh icon acknowledged that the natural process of ageing affects every part of the body, including the vocal cords. However, he made it clear that he has no intentions of slowing down, despite having to work harder to perform and having less control over his voice.
Sir Tom is currently embarking on his Ages and Stages world tour, which will take him to various countries such as America, Germany, and Portugal before returning to the UK. With a career that spans over six decades, the It's Not Unusual hitmaker has no plans of retiring anytime soon. "I can still sing," he assured in an interview with Yours magazine, "All you have to do is push harder...and I can still do that."
Although Sir Tom is now more commonly known as a coach on The Voice, he is well aware of the limitations that come with age. "My voice is lower now," he explained, "As we get older, our voices drop and we gain more character in them. But unfortunately, the older we get, the less control we have over our vocal cords." Despite these challenges, Sir Tom feels that being older gives him a point to prove and is determined to continue performing and showcasing his vocal abilities.
Last year, Sir Tom also revealed that the only way he would retire is if he completely lost his voice. And even though he can't move around on stage like he used to, he remains focused on giving his audience an unforgettable performance. "I wouldn't want to shortchange an audience," he stated, "Being old, you can't do what you used to do. But now, I concentrate more on singing than anything else."
The singer recently performed at D-Day events and confessed that he was struggling when he needed a second hip operation in late 2022. Fans were relieved to see him using a walking stick, and Sir Tom himself declared, "Papa has two new hips now!" Reassuring his fans, he added, "For all those who were concerned and sent well wishes, I am pleased to report that my recent surgery went very well. I am following orders and doing my physio, so I am happy to say that I will be back soon."
Sir Tom also shared that his first hip replacement surgery was back in 2017. Although he now prefers to sit down for live performances, he never once considered stopping altogether. "When you're young, you're full of energy and enthusiasm," he explained, "But now, I have learned to focus more on my singing, and that's what matters the most."
