Change is often seen as a positive thing, just like a vacation. This is why when a renowned restaurant like ASKR announces a new pop-up, it's worth embracing the change. The Plaice pop-up began on September 12th, featuring a menu that celebrates Scotland's seafood offerings at ASKR restaurant. Located on Constitution Street in Leith, just a short distance from the tram stop at the shore, ASKR is a cozy spot that becomes even more inviting as the nights grow longer.
If you're someone who loves sharing small plates, the menu at Plaice is perfect for you. But don't worry, there are also options for those who prefer dining from their own plate. We started off with the ceps on toast, a hearty serving of sourdough topped with tender and meaty mushrooms. And of course, we couldn't resist trying the half dozen oysters, which were beautifully presented with a tangy lime granita.
For a change of pace, we ordered the hot smoked salmon and a creamy potato salad that was simply mouth-watering. Meanwhile, I had to convince my dining companion to share just one of his deliciously sweet Portuguese-style clams in a garlic and white wine sauce. We also tried the lobster tagliatelle from the specials board, which was an absolute delight with perfectly cooked pasta, succulent chunks of lobster, and a rich and buttery bisque sauce. The Scottish tuna with chilli and daikon salad was also a standout dish, with a generous portion of meaty tuna encrusted with seeds and served with a sweet and peppery salad.
Even though we were already satisfied with our meal, we couldn't resist trying the crème brulee and chocolate cremeaux for dessert. Both were delicious and made for a perfect end to our dining experience. The wine list at ASKR is extensive, with a great selection of wines that pair well with seafood. We opted for a fresh and light Grillo from Sicily, but there are also options for those who are more knowledgeable about wine.
If you're feeling adventurous, you can even order selected wines in smaller or larger glasses, or even a 500ml carafe. And for those who enjoy cocktails, the innovative and reasonably priced cocktail list is definitely worth exploring. We started the evening off with the Euphoria, a gin-based cocktail with strawberry and ginger, and ended with a limoncello negroni called Sunshine on Leith. Both were fantastic choices and added to the overall experience.
The Plaice pop-up menu will only be available for a month, so make sure to visit ASKR and try it out while you can.
