App helps Black-owned businesses provide shelter from dangerous weather conditions.
Mother Nature can be unpredictable and at times even deadly. Robert Washington, a resident of Oklahoma City, had a brush with a tornado in 2015 that could have ended in tragedy. In that moment, he decided to create an app to help those in vulnerable situations find a way to safety and security.

With the help of Builders and Backers, Washington created the Shelter Share app. This app serves as a guide to users on where to find shelter when a tornado is approaching. It provides information on community shelters, public buildings, and other safe areas, as well as provides an opportunity for users to either look for shelter or offer it to others.

Washington told The Black Wall Street Times, “You can make a 24-hour reservation in advance. I’m hoping it inspires people to be more weather-aware and prepared. There are people out there that are getting injured."

The number of users of Shelter Share is increasing as people learn more about the app and the services it provides. Washington hopes to continue to expand Shelter Share’s reach and include more features and upgrades for its users. He compares the experience to Airbnb for both people and their pets.

If you’d like to find out more about Shelter Share, you can visit the website or download the app from the Apple or Google store.
