Alert issued for 10 districts in Odisha due to rising water levels in the Mahanadi river.
In the city of Bhubaneswar, Odisha, the Special Relief Commissioner, Satyabrata Sahu, issued a warning to the collectors of 10 districts on Friday. This was due to the increase in water level of the Mahanadi River caused by the release of water from Hirakud Dam. The districts that were put on alert were Sambalpur, Subarnapur, Nayagarh, Angul, Boudh, Puri, Khuda, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, and Kendrapara.

According to a senior official, the water level in the Mahanadi River at Mundali was recorded at 5.78 lakh cusecs at 8am on Friday. In light of this, Sahu urged the collectors to pay special attention to the safety of those living in low-lying areas. This was necessary to prevent any potential harm caused by the rising water levels.

In addition, to ensure the safety of the people, six more sluice gates were opened at Hirakud Dam to release additional water. This was in response to heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas of the Mahanadi River. Currently, a total of 14 gates, including nine on the left spillway and five on the right, are being used to release water from the reservoir. As of 6am, the water level of the dam was recorded at 612.25 ft, which is below its maximum capacity of 630 ft.

Bhakta Ranjan Mohanty, the Chief Engineer of the Water Resources Department, reassured that despite the swelling of some rivers, there is no immediate danger of flooding in any area. However, it is important to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to avoid any potential risks.

Unfortunately, it has been reported that the floodwater has already entered some low-lying areas of Khurda and Cuttack districts. This serves as a reminder of the importance of being prepared and taking necessary measures to minimize the potential impact of natural disasters. The authorities are closely monitoring the situation and taking necessary actions to ensure the safety and well-being of the people.
