AFRO News hosted a special luncheon on Tuesday, November 7th to honor the many Black veterans who have served the country from World War II to the most recent battles. The event, entitled “A Salute to Our Veterans”, was held at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum in Baltimore, and was attended by some of the most distinguished veterans, including Major General Janeen Birckhead, retired Major Edgar Brookings, and retired Colonel Edna Cummings.
During the event, Dr. Frances “Toni” Draper, the CEO and publisher of AFRO, expressed her appreciation for the sacrifices made by our veterans. She stated, “Honoring the sacrifice and service of our veterans is a year-round obligation, but today is a special day to celebrate their stories. Through ‘A Salute to Our Veterans,’ we aim to bridge the generations of military heroism on display in the Black community.”
The luncheon was made possible by the generous sponsorship of BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport, Morgan State University, and Greater Baltimore Medical Center. At the event, Colonel Cummings remarked, “I didn’t get here alone. Thousands of veterans and organizations stepped up and supported.”
The event was a tribute to the 131-year history of AFRO News, which was founded by Dr. Draper’s grandfather, John H. Murphy Sr., a formerly enslaved Civil War sergeant. In her closing remarks, Draper said, “We’ve got a lot of veterans here today, and we want to stop and say thank you for your service. We have been honoring veterans almost the entire life of our 131-year existence.”
The attendees were also treated to a performance by the Morgan State University ROTC program and the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute Junior ROTC Color Guard. This event was a meaningful way to recognize the bravery and service of our veterans, and to thank them for their many sacrifices.
