Actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II shines in his role as a 'Man on Fire'.

As he gears up for his starring role in Netflix's highly anticipated Man on Fire, award-winning actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II takes a moment to reflect on his journey to becoming a Hollywood powerhouse. In a recent interview with Ryan Clark and the cast of The Pivot podcast, Abdul-Mateen II opened up about how his architecture background ultimately led him to pursue acting. Before making a name for himself in major blockbuster films, Abdul-Mateen II graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in architecture and worked in city planning.

However, it was during his time as a student that he realized his passion for acting. As someone with a speech impediment, giving presentations in his architecture classes was a challenge. In an effort to improve his public speaking skills, he decided to take an acting class.

"I figured that taking an acting class would help me to overcome my stutter to help me with my architecture presentations. It didn't. Not at all," he shared with The Pivot panel.

"But I never stuttered when I was acting. And I was good at it." In Man on Fire, Abdul-Mateen II takes on the role of John Creasy, a skilled former special forces mercenary struggling with PTSD. This complex character, originally played by Denzel Washington in the 2004 film, is on a journey towards redemption.

Beyond the physical demands of the role, Abdul-Mateen II is known for choosing roles that challenge societal norms and showcase the complexity of the Black experience. This can be seen in his Emmy-winning performance in HBO's The Watchmen, where he delved into themes of hidden identity and racial trauma. He further solidified his status as a leading man in the 2021 reimagining of Candyman.

And now, he is taking on the role of a Man on Fire, set to premiere on Netflix on April 30th. Abdul-Mateen II's dedication to pushing boundaries and telling important stories is commendable. It's no wonder why he has become a Hollywood powerhouse and a fan-favorite.

With his talent and passion, he is sure to continue making a significant impact in the industry.
